If you examine me, you will find no qualities. Your mercy is all that I am made of.
If we are to carefully deliberate upon our qualification to be in the movement of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, we would realise that we have no qualification what so ever. Wrought of sinful tendencies and lacking in true surrender, we are in no way qualified to have achieved this good fortune of being on the path that shall lead us to transcendental bliss in the loving service of Sri Krishna. This has only been possible due to the causeless abundant mercy of Srila Prabhupad, the founder Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, who took the mission of Mahaprabhu and spread it throughout the whole world, thus creating the good fortune of millions, who would otherwise be trapped in the cycle of repeated birth and death.
Appearing in the year 1896 on the auspicious day of Nandotsav in Kolkata in the house of Gaurmohan dey, Abhay Charan dey, who later came to be affectionately addressed as Srila Prabhuad by his disciples, was the apple of everyone’s eyes and possessed a natural attraction towards Sri Krishna from his very childhood, daily going to the temple near their house and celebrating Rathayatra with his friends. Later onwards when he met his spiritual master Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Thakur and received the instruction from him to preach the message of Sachinandan Gaurahari to the English-speaking world, he took the instructions of his Spiritual master to his heart and would regularly contemplate on who to accomplish the task given to him be his Guru. At the right opportunity provided by the Lord, Abhay Charan renounced family life and dedicated his life to the instructions given to him by his Spiritual master. After spending some time in Sri Vrindavan Dham, translating and writing his purports for the first few cantos of Srimad Bhagwatam and preparing to go to the western countries, he went to America by ship and brought the good fortune of the people of that country with him. Despite all the difficulties, including two heart attacks that he had on the way to America, through perseverance and a strong desire to fulfil the inner heart’s desire of his Spiritual master, he successfully established the international society for Krishna consciousness. He then travelled the entire globe numerous times preaching the holy names of Krishna and establishing many temples, thus fulfilling the prophecy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu that one day his names will be chanted in every town and village.
On his appearance day, we therefore pray to receive a particle of his mercy so that we may be able to continue in his service and achieve some taste for the chanting of the holy names of the Lord.
