Glories of Hare Krishna Mahamantra

hare krishna hare krishna, krishna krishna hare hare.
hare rama hare rama, rama rama hare hare;
iti shodashakam namnam, kali-kalmasha-nashanam
natah parataropayah, sarva-vedeshu drishyate.

This sixteen words mantra are especially meant for completely destroying all the contamination of Kali. To save oneself from the contamination of Kali-yuga, there is no alternative in all theVedas except the chanting of this sixteen-word mantra.

Once, when asked by his son, Narad Muni, about how the living entities will be able to deliver themselves from the degraded age of Kali, Lord Brahma recited the above verses, stating that the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, consisting of sixteen names, is the only means of deliverance in this age of Kali. He Further states that even after an extensive search in all the vedas, he did not find any other means capable of delivering the living entities, other than the most purifying Hare Krishna Mahamantra. In this present age, which is characterised by quarrels, impurity, short lifespan, lack of intelligence, and innumerable other faults, it is very difficult for a conditioned living entity to make progress on the path of Spiritual realisation through the process of penances, yajnas or worship to the archavigraha of the Lord, which are the prescribed methods of Spiritual advancement for the other three ages preceding Kali Yuga. Therefore, the prescribed method of attaining auspiciousness in the present times is the chanting of the Holy names of the Lord. Sri Sukadev Goswami says in the Srimad Bhagwatam:

kaler doṣa-nidhe rājann
 asti hy eko mahān guṇaḥ
kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya
 mukta-saṅgaḥ paraṁ vrajet
My dear King, although Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: Simply by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom.

Despite the clear instructions given in the shastras to chant the names of the Lord, the conditioned living entities, being covered by the illusory energy of the Lord, fail to do that, which is the truly beneficial activity, and therefore, being merciful upon all the living entities, Sri Sachinandan Gaurahari appeared 500 years ago on this earthly planet, to propagate Harinaam Sankirtan. In order to encourage everyone to take to this sublime process of Krishna Consciousness, he has stated in the second verse of Sri Shikshashtakam, that the Supreme Lord has endowed his holy names with all his transcendental potentiates and that there are no rules and regulations even for the chanting of the Holy names.
namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-shaktis
tatrarpita niyamitah smarane na kalah
etadrishi tava kripa bhagavan mamapi
durdaivam idrisham ihajani nanuragaha

O my Lord, Your holy name alone can render all benediction to living beings, and thus You have hundreds and millions of names like Krishna and Govinda. In these transcendental names You have invested all Your transcendental energies. There are not even hard and fast rules for chanting these names. O my Lord, out of kindness You enable us to easily approach You by Your holy names, but I am so unfortunate that I have no attraction for them.

Therefore, taking advantage of this glorious opportunity, we should all, with full enthusiasm, surrender, love and devotion, chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra and make our lives successful. As Srila Prabhupad says, we should make the best use of a bad bargain. Being controlled by the material nature, we have suffered in this material world since time immemorial, but now, having received the causeless mercy of Sri Gaurahari, we have fortunately come into the process of Krishna Conciousness. Taking advantage of our good fortune, we should immerse ourselves in the chanting of the Holy names and cross over the ocean of birth and death.
