varam deva moksam na moksavadhim va
na canyam vrne ‘ham varesad apiha
idam te vapur natha gopala-balam
sada me manasy avirastam kim anyaih
O Lord, although You are able to give all kinds of benedictions, I do not pray to You for the boon of impersonal liberation, nor the highest liberation of eternal life in Vaikuntha, nor any other boon (which may be obtained by executing the nine processes of bhakti). O Lord, I simply wish that this form of Yours as Bala Gopala in Vrndavana may ever be manifest in my heart, for what is the use to me of any other boon besides this?
There are many great Yogis and transcendentalists, who are always very eager to merge into the impersonal Brahman, thinking that to be the highest destination, oblivious to the fact that Brahman realisation is merely the first level of God realisation. Brahman has been explained as the effulgence of the Lord and merging into the Brahma Jyoti is certainly not the Goal of the Vaishnvas, who are aware not only of the localised form of the Lord, known as Paramatma, but also of the personalised form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna, who is Sat chit ananda swaroop, as described in the first verse. For all those who are devotees of the personalised form of the Lord in the form of Lord Narayan, who resides in the numerous Vaikuntha planets along with devi Laxmi and his various associates, or of any other Vishnu Murti such as Varaha, Narasimha, Lord Ram and so forth, can achieve various kinds of Muktis, such as Samipya, Sarupya, Salokya and so forth, in which the Sadhaka attains the association of the Lord, the same form as the Lord, can reside on the same planet as the Lord and other such good fortunes. However, Satyavrata Muni is not desiring even these Muktis, rather he is simply praying that the sweetest form of the Lord, as Bal Gopal, should always be manifest in his heart. This is the same mood that can be seen in our previous acharyas as well, and that which was preached by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This sort of Bhakti, which is not tinged with the desire to attain liberation from the material world and is simply centred at being eternally absorbed in the thoughts of the Lord in each and every circumstance, is the highest form of pure love of Godhead. The devotee is so absorbed in serving the Lord and thinking about him, that even the desire for Mukti does not enter in his hearts. This has been expressed by Srila Rupa goswami in Sri Bhakti:
śīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā
(CC Madhya 19.167)
“One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa favorably and without desire for material profit or gain through fruitive activities or philosophical speculation. That is called pure devotional service.”
There is no scope of any other desire but to please the Lord in Shudha Bhakti. This has also been explained in Sri Shikshashtakam by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu:
āśliṣya vā pāda-ratāṁ pinaṣṭu mām
adarśanān marma-hatāṁ karotu vā
yathā tathā vā vidadhātu lampaṭo
mat-prāṇa-nāthas tu sa eva nāparaḥ
“Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is the lover of many devotees (women), may embrace this fully surrendered maidservant or may trample me with His feet, or He may render me brokenhearted by not being present before me for a long duration of time, but still He is nothing less than the Absolute Lord of my heart.”
This is pure love of Godhead. Where the devotee considers the Lord to be his life and soul, not desiring anything but the service of the Lord. Expressing the same mood, Satyavrata Muni is also completely disregarding even the highest form of Liberation and is simply praying to be able to constantly remember Lord Damodar.
