Evaluating the gone-by year

On the last day of the year, we all must take some time out of our otherwise busy schedules and contemplate upon the more important things in life. We have, by some unimaginable good fortune, not only received this most blessed human form of life in which one has the opportunity to seek out the truth about life but have also received the glorious shelter of the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupad and our most exalted Guru-parampara. With such  a conducive situation, we should ensure to take full advantage of our good fortune and engage ourselves in the service of the Lord by chanting his holy names, reading bhakti literatures, remembering his pastimes with his dear associates in his transcendental abode of  Goloka, and performing various other services like cooking for the Lords, cleaning the temple, making garlands, prasadam distribution and above all preaching the glories of the Lord and thus benefiting innumerable conditioned living entities. By thus constantly engaging in the service of the Lord and offering the results of all our work at the lotus feet of the Lord, we shall save ourselves from getting caught-up in the snares of the Karmic process of action and reaction in the three material moods. By thus being freed from the cycle of birth and death, and developing pure love of Godhead, by reawakening our eternal transcendental relationship with him and serving him, we shall truly fulfil the actual purpose of life. If however, we do not act in this way, we are sure to continue suffering the three fold miseries for eternity. Therefore, on this day of the year we should look back and evaluate our spiritual practices, our endeavour to go closer to Krishna, and see whether we have put in enough effort, and to see how to improve. Srila Rupa Goswami has mentioned the five most important limbs of Bhakti,  which are the chanting and singing of the holy names, hearing the Srimad Bhagwatam, Serving the deity form of the Lord with great affection, associating with like-minded devotees, and residing in the holy dham of Mathura-Vrindavan, if not physically then mentally. We should therefore think of how to increase these five limbs of devotional service in our lives, and thus make our lives successful. So, on this day, we all pray to Srila Prabhupad, Sri Sri Gaur Nitai, Sri Sri Krishna Balaram, and Sri Sri Radha Shyamsundar to engage us in their service and allow us to make advancement in our spiritual lives.
