Srila Bhakti Siddhanta’s Vow

The pure devotees of the Lord are endowed with amazing qualities, one of which is renunciation and complete sense control. Their pastimes are awe inspiring and fill the devotees following in their footsteps with admiration and respect for them. One such great personality who performed numerous extraordinary pastimes is Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur, the spiritual master of Srila Prabhupad.

Once, when he was about three years old, Vimala Prasad, the illustrious son of Bhakti Vinod thakur who later came to be known as Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur, ate a Mango without first offering it to the Family deity. When his father came to know that he has eaten a Mango without first offering it to Sri Krishna, he was very displeased and heavily chastised the young boy. Understanding that one should not eat anything without offering it first and feeling greatly distressed at heart, Vimala Prasad, merely a three years old boy, vowed to never again eat Mangos in his entire life. From that day forth, Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur upheld this vow for his entire life, even though he was just a small child when he had taken this vow and even though his eating the mango was merely an act performed in childish innocence. He would accept raw mango preparations but he never ate one single ripe mango in his entire life.

All glories to the austerity of these great personalities. All glories to Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupad.
