All glories to Namacharya Srila Haridas Thakur, one of the dear most associates of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who used to chant three lakhs of names every single day without fail. And all glories to the Holy disappearance day of this great personality, who was put in samadhi by Sri Gaurahari himself on the auspicious day of Ananta Chaturdashi in the month of Bhadrapada. Srila Haridas thakur was indeed a storehouse of the highest level of Vaishnava qualities such humility, steadfastness, renunciation and so forth. Being born in a muslim family, despite being a great vaishnava, he always considered himself to be extremely fallen and destitute, to the extent that during his stay in Puri he would not even go on the path taken by the Pujaris of Lord Jagannath for the fear of contaminating them by his presence. Being completely fixed in his vow of chanting his fixed number of rounds, he would never take prasad without first finishing his naamjapa. Completely satisfied by the mood of Srila Haridas Thakur, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu would come and visit him everyday after taking darshan of Jagannath while staying in Puri. On one such occasion, the Lord brought a bakul twig offered to Lord Jagannath as a Datun, or tooth cleaner, and planted it next to Haridas thakur. With the desire of the Lord, the twig immediately sprouted and grew into a huge tree with branches spread out in all directions giving a cool pleasant shade, under which Haridas Thakur began doing his bhajan in accordance with the instruction of Mahaprabhu. When Srila Raghunath Das goswami came to Sri Jagannath Puri after leaving his household life, Sri Gaurahari instructed him to stay with Haridas Thakur and together these two great souls would discuss about Sri Krishna through out the day and night. Sri Gaurahari would at times also tell Haridas Thakur to tell him about the glories of the holy names, to which Haridas thakur would meekly say that he was not qualified to say anything but when Mahaprabhu would insist he would humbly comply and extensively glorify the unparalleled glory of the holy names, which are invested with all the shakti of Sri Krishna himself.
Once, when Srila Haridas thakur had reached old age, Sri Gaurahari came to visit him and enquired about his well being, for he had heard from other devotees that Srila Haridas Thakur had not been eating for a few days. When asked by the Lord, Srila Haridas Thakur, in great distress, answered that although his body was fine, his mind was not well, for he was not being able to finish his fixed number of naam. And knowing that Srila Haridas thakur was very steadfast in his vow of not taking prasad before finisheing his naamjapa, Mahaprabhu could understand why he had not been eating. To this Gaurahari requested him to reduce his fixed number of rounds, for he had reached old age and must take care of his health as well. Taking this opportunity, Srila Haridas Thakur revealed his heartfelt desire in front of the Lord. Haridas Thakur requested the Lord to allow him to leave the world in his presence, so that he may be able to fix his vision upon the lotus face of Gaurahari while leaving this material world. Being merciful upon his dear devotee, he granted Haridas Thakur his desire, and on the day of Ananta Chaturdashi all the devotees assmbled at Siddha Bakul. Placing Haridas Thakur’s head in his lap, Sri Gaurahari affectionately gave Haridas Thakur the opportunity to bring his pastimes in this world to a close amidst kirtan, while gazing at the lotus face of his most worshipable Lord. In this way Srila Haridas Thakur left this world. Thereafter, taking Srila Haridas thakur’s divine form in his arms, Sriman Mahaprabhu danced ecstatically in the Kirtan, with tears of love flowing like rivers from his lotus like eyes. Accompanied by all the devotees, the lord then took Haridas Thakur to the ocean where he was bathed and put into samadhi at the shore of the ocean. He then personally went from house to house to beg for alms so that a big festival may be arranged for the disappearance of Haridas Thakur. In the festival that was then celebrated, he again danced madly in separation from his dear associate, after which he personally fed all the vaishnavas who had come for the festival. In this way he honoured the great Namacharya Srila Haridas Thakur.
On this auspicious day of his disappearance, we pray at the lotus feet of Srila Haridas thakur to please bless us with some taste for chanting the holy names of the Lord, for Krishna naam is the only solace for the suffering conditioned living entities stuck in the material world.
