Srila Vyas dev, the literary incarnation of the Lord has mercifully compiled the vedic literatures in such a way that they accommodate all the various kinds of human beings endowed with varied inclinations. For those primarily in the mode of ignorance, he has presented the tamasic puranas, for those in the mode of passion, the rajasik puranas and for those in the mode of goodness, the satwik puranas. The vedas themselves give various guidelines on how to perform various ritualistic ceremonies to achieve better quality of material enjoyment in the higher planetary systems. They give instructions on how to achieve dharma, artha, kaam and moksha or religiosity, economic development, sense gratification and liberation. They also give information about the non dual Brahman existence, which is essence is the mere effulgence of the transcendental form of the Lord, for the sake of those who are inclined towards the monistic school of thought and in literatures such as the Srimad Bhagwatam, pancharatras and other such satwik literatures, the process of bhakti has been beautifully explained to attract the minds and hearts of those fortunate jivas who are eligible to follow this most exalted path.
Even in the Srimad Bhagawatam, along with the descriptions of the names, forms, qualities and pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna and his various incarnations such as Rama, Narasimha and so on, the Virat rupa and the understanding of the material creation being the representation of the various bodily limbs of the Lord, has been given first, for the benefit of the living entities who are completely engrossed in the material conception of life and are interested primarily in the functioning of the gross material world. By thus explaining the material creation in relation to the Supreme Being, the Srimad Bhagwatam encourages such people who are enamoured by the material creation to accept the hand of the Supreme Lord behind the wonders of the Creation and by thus glorifying and respecting the Lord these living entities may get purified and achieve the qualification to understand higher and more sublime topics related to the personal form and nectarian pastimes of the Lord, which they would not be able to relish in their present level of understanding. By such gradual increase in God consciousness, the living entities, after understanding the Supreme position of the Lord, can understand the presence of the Lord in each and every living entity and in each and every atom of the universe, thus realising his Paramatma feature. And progressing further they can surrender at the lotus feet of the Sri Krishna, understanding him to be the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the embodiment of sat-chit-ananda, eternity, knowledge and bliss, and the cause of all causes. But the Srimad Bhagwatam does not stop at this realisation of the Supreme position of Sri Krishna, rather, it takes one further and makes one relish the bliss of pure love of Godhead in one of the five rasas or mellows of devotional service. Describing the love of the Vraja Sundaris for Sri Krishna which is completely selfless, pure and the highest form of worship of the Lord, this best of all literatures, Srimad Bhagwatam, gives one the highest jewel of Vrajabhakti following in the footsteps of the Gopis.
It is therefore famous as the best of all literature, the mature fruit of the desire tree of vedic knowledge, and the spotless purana, for it takes one from the very basic understanding of the Virat form of the Lord, which is manifest only in the material creation and is just a partial expansion of the Lord, up to the topmost extent of spiritual knowledge. It is thus advisable for one and all, regardless of one’s level or inclination in spiritual life, to read the Srimad Bhagwatam for it is a storehouse of love of Godhead and can satisfy each and every one who is searching for the absolute truth.
