The holy name, character, pastimes and activities of Krsna are all transcendentally sweet like sugar candy. Although the tongue of one afflicted by the jaundice of avidya [ignorance] cannot taste anything sweet, it is wonderful that simply by carefully chanting these sweet names every day, a natural relish awakens within his tongue, and his disease is gradually destroyed at the root.
The process of attaining the highest goal of life, loving devotion towards Sri Krishna, is achieved through the practice of the same principals of devotion. The only difference is in the quality of the performance of the limbs of devotional service. What we are doing now by the endeavour of the gross material senses will become a spontaneous activity of the heart in the purified stage. Just as we chant the names of the Lord, discuss about his pastimes, perform various services like cooking for the Deities, making garlands and so on, similarly all of residents of Goloka Vrindavan are also eternally engaged in singing the glories of Krishna, discussing about him, cooking for him and performing various other services. The difference, however, lies in the love that is there in the heart. The residents of Vraja are so completely saturated with pure love for Shyamsundar that they spontaneously engage all their senses in the service of Krishna without any consideration about personal pleasure. However, our performance of these activities is oftentimes not completely pure and our heart still harbours various material desires and herein lies the main difference between the conditioned living entities and the eternal associates of the Lord. But to reach that stage of pure love of Godhead, the process none the less constitutes the same limbs of devotion.
Therefore, in this verse of Sri Upadeshamrita, Srila Rupa Goswami is saying that although the holy names, character, associates and pastimes of the Lord are sweet as sugar candy and filled with transcendental bliss, yet due to our own unfortunate obsession with material sense gratification, we are unable to taste his sweetness. Srila Rupa goswami has likened our situation to a person suffering from the disease of Jaundice who is unable to taste the sweetness of sugar candy due to the disease. However, the sweetness of the sugar candy does not reduce due to the inability of the diseased person to taste it, similarly Sri Krishna is also eternally the personification of complete sweetness. After explaining our situation, he gives the solution as well, saying that Sri Krishna’s holy names are so wonderful that just by carefully chanting them everyday this material disease will gradually diminish and eventually completely finish and thus we will be able to relish the divine sweetness of the Lord.
Keeping in mind these instructions of Srila Rupa goswami, we should, with great faith and attention, continue chanting the holy names of the Lord, even if at the present moment we are not being able to taste the sweetness of Sri Harinaam. By such continuous chanting, we shall be purified of our conditioned nature and thus become competent at tasting the nectarian names of Nandanandana.
