One of the most favourite activities of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Harinam Sankirtan. The Gaudia Vaishanava acharyas, following in the footsteps of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, emphasized on Harinam Sankirtan on the streets of every town and village. ISKCON Vrindavan is famous for many aspects of spirituality – one of them being the hub for Harinam Sankirtan. And following in these steps the Namahatta department performs Harinam Sankirtan on a large scale on the streets of Mathura, Vrindavan, and other local areas of Vraja.
Daily, at least two teams of devotees visit nearby places to perform the Yuga Dharma of Harinam Sankirtan. Mother Kalandi Radha Devi Dasi leads one team and they perform Sankirtan in front of the temple, where usually large crowds gather, and in other parts of Vrindavan. Another team is led by Purusottama prabhu and Madhusudan prabhu. The team visits nearby villages and blissfully engages them in Kirtans. Each team consists of six to eight devotees with Mridangas, Kartals and other musical instruments as their weapons to fight against Maya. In the villages the Kirtana is usually followed by a small lecture and prasadam distribution.
Lord Krishna performed His lilas in more than 1,500 villages that constitute Vrajadham. One of the aims of ISKCON Vrindavan Namahatta team is to reach to all these villages to make them aware of the glories of Srila Prabhupada and the teachings of ISKCON. To fulfill this purpose another team, led by Shyamal prabhu and Sunil prabhu, visits various villages four times a week and perform Sankirtan, deliver lecture and distribute prasadam.
