The auspicious day of Makar Sankranti which falls on the 14th of January is considered a very auspicious day, and marks the entering of the sun into the sign of Capricorn or ‘Makar’.  Although in ancient times all Sankrantis were observed and celebrated, Makar sankranti is of special importance, as it also marks the beginning of the auspicious six month period of Uttarayan, the Sannyasa thithi of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and also the descent of the river Ganges on this earthly planet.

After the war on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, when Bhishma dev was lying on a bed of arrows and was about to leave his body, at that time he was waiting for the sun to enter into Uttarayan, as it is considered to be an auspicious time, and therefore it may be understood that he left his body on the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti while beholding the beautiful face of Lord Krishna in the holy place of Kurukshetra which is also known as Dharmakshetra.

This glorious day also marks the descent of mother Ganges on this earthly planet, after the austere penances performed by King Bhageerath with the aspiration to free his ancestors from the curse of Kapila rishi, who, at being falsely accused by the sixty thousand sons of King Sagar for stealing the sacrificial horse actually stolen by indra, cursed them to go to the Nether regions. After being pacified by their prayers, he proclaimed that the only way for their salvation would be if the river Ganges would descend from the heavenly planets and come down to the earth and upto the nether regions, then by being purified by her they shall be freed from the curse. After the austere penances of King Bhageerath, the most purifying Mother Ganges came down to the earth on the day of Maker Sankranti, and this descent of hers is celebrated till today in the form of Ganga Sagar Mela, when numerous pilgrims go to the Sagar islands in West Bengal and bathe in the holy confluence of the Ganga with the ocean.

Another significant event that took place on this day was the acceptance of the Sannyas order of life by Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu for the purpose of preaching and propagating the path of devotional service and delivering all the fallen conditioned souls in this age of Kali. It was on this day that he left behind his widowed mother and young wife in Mayapur, and in the village of Katwa he renounced his Grhast ashram and accepted Sannyas from Shri Keshava Bharati, shaving his beautiful locks of hair and donning saffron cloths. Although, being the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one of his opulence is that he is the most renounced and therefore there was no need for him to accept the renounced order of Sannyas, yet seeing the faultfinding nature of the people and understanding that if he would accept the life of a renunciant then the general populace would be able give him the proper respect and refrain from committing offences at his lotus feet, he decided to take sannyas. Thereafter he inundated the entire universe with Krishna Bhakti and it is due to his causeless mercy alone that we are able to today tread the path of devotion under the guidance and following in the footsteps of his followers.

anarpita-carīṁ cirāt karuṇayāvatīrṇaḥ kalau
samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasāṁ sva-bhakti-śrīyam
hariḥ puraṭa-sundara-dyuti-kadamba-sandīpitaḥ
sadā hṛdaya-kandare sphuratu vaḥ śacī-nandanaḥ

May that Lord who is known as the son of Śrīmatī Śacīdevī be transcendentally situated in the innermost core of your heart. Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, He has descended in the Age of Kaliby His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation has ever offered before: the most elevated mellow of devotional service, the mellow of conjugal love.

In 2021, this day of Makar sankranti coincides with the auspicious appearance day of the illustrious disciple of Srila Narahari Chakravarti, Sri Lochan Das Thakur. The Shukla prathama tithi in the month of Poush is blessed for Srila Lochan das thakur appeared on this day in the village of Kograma in Katwa at the banks of the Ajaya River. Born in the physician caste to Kamalakara Das and Sadanande devi, Srila Lochan das thakur was very much attached to the lotus feet of Sri Sachinandan Gaurahari and to the narrations of Sri Krishna’s pastimes from his very childhood. In accordance with the prevalent tradition, he was married at a very young age, but his wife had remained at her parent’s house and was to join him after they had grown up. When the time for his wife to come to his house was nearing, his parents began to worry about him as he was totally indifferent towards family life. Seeing this, they went to Srila Narahari Chakravarti and submitted their concern at his lotus feet, upon hearing which he instructed Lochan das thakur to go to the house of his wife. Following the instructions of his spiritual master, Lochan das thakur went to the village of his wife and, having forgotten the way to his in-law’s house, he asked for directions from one women, after having addressed her as ‘Ma’, meaning mother. He later discovered that the woman whom he had addressed as mother was actually his wife, but that day onward he started respecting his wife as a mother and maintained complete detachment from family life. He was constantly engaged in discussing and remembering the pastimes of the Lord in the association of other devotees.  Later, following the instructions of his Spiritual Master, he wrote Sri Chaitanya Mangal, a poetic masterpiece beautifully describing the pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.  Along with this glorious book, he wrote other books as well, and is the author of many wonderful bhajans such as the following one:

parama karuna pahun dui jana
nitai gaurachandra
saba avatara, sara shiromani
kevala ananda kanda

Nitai and Gaurachandra, are the two most compassionate Lords. They are the essence of all incarnations, the crest-jewels of the avatars, the source of the unique joy of prema.

bhaja bhaja bhai, chaitanya nitai
sudhrida visvasa kori
vishaya chariya se rase majiya
mukha bolo hari hari

O brother! I implore you to worship Gaura-Nitai with firm faith. Give up your attachment to sense gratification and merge into this nectar by chanting the names of Hari.

dekho ore bhai, tribhuvane nai
emona doyala data
pashu-pakhi jhure, pashana vidore
shuni yar guna gantha

Look, O brother! There is no benefactor in the three worlds who is as merciful as they. Even birds and animals are fulfilled by hearing their qualities, and stones melt.

samsare majiya, rahile pariya
se pade nahilo asha
apana koroma, bhunjaye shamana,
kohoye locana dasa

Absorbed in the cycle of birth and death, you have fallen by the wayside without any hope for achieving their company. The lord of death will come and make you suffer the results of your activities – so sings Locana Das.On this auspicious day of his appearance, we beg for his mercy, so that we may be able to devote our lives in the service of Sri Gaurasundar and his dear devotees.
