The coexistence of opposites in the Lord

In this world of duality, it is difficult for the conditioned living entities to comprehend the transcendental nature of the Lord and how in him even contradictory phenomena exist simultaneously in full harmony. Even though being the creator, maintainer and destroyer of the material manifestation, he remains aloof from it, eternally present in his transcendental Supreme position. He is simultaneously present both within and without of this material manifestation. Along with performing his pastimes eternally in his transcendental abode, he is also present in each and every atom in each and every universe of this creation. His transcendental nature and activities are incomprehensible, and for one who understands them, there is no returning to the material creation again, as is stated by the Lord himself in Bhagawat Gita,

janma karma ca me divyam
evam yo vetti tattvatah
tyaktva deham punar janma
naiti mam eti so ‘rjuna

One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.

His sweet pastimes during his advent in this material world are also filled with many such instances that show perfect harmony between otherwise opposite phenomena, which is only possible in the Supreme Personality of Godhead. His unfathomable potencies make it possible so that even though he is the unborn eternal Supreme Personality of Godhead, yet for the purpose of performing pastimes and to give pleasure to his devotees, he takes his birth from the womb of Mother Devaki in Mathura and simultaneously from the womb of Mother Yashoda in Vrindavan. Despite his being Atmaram, satisfied in the self, he hankers for his mother’s breast milk and displays transcendental anger when she doesn’t fulfill his desire immediately. In spite of apparently being a mere toddler, he became as heavy as a huge mountain so that the demon trinavrata could no longer bear his weight and fell to the ground smashing his head and dying. The inducer of fear in fear personified himself, becomes fearful of his mother, when he sees her chasing him with a stick in the hand, and tears roll down his soft cheeks. The establisher of the Religious principles, during his childhood pastimes in Vraja, which enchant the minds of even the great Sages who are completely free from the attachments of this material world, steals butter from the houses of the Cowherd girls and eats his food with his left hand. Being bound by the affection of his dear friends, the master of the entire creation bends down in front of his dear Sakhas and carries them on his back after losing at a game of Tug of War. The Supreme Personality, the epitome of all strength, accepts defeat at the hands of his friends Subal and Sridam in Wrestling matches, for his prowess is rendered ineffective in comparison to the strength of the love that his friends have for him. Indeed, the one who is described as Nirguna in the Vedas, for he is not touched by the modes of material nature, is replete with all transcendental Gunas, good qualities, that attract the hearts of all the Vrajavasis. The same Lord, the controller of the material and spiritual words, is completely under the control of his beloved Gopis, who consider him to be their very life and soul. The greatest renunciant, becomes attracted by the complete surrender of the Vraja Gopis, who give up their familial ties and relations for the service of the Lord. Being completely bound by their love, the attracter of the entire universe, is attracted by their sweet smiles, gentle speech, sidelong glances, graceful moves and graceful charm. Such are the pastimes of the sweet Lord Shyam.

It is only by true devotion, surrender and hearing about these characteristics of the Lord from the mouths of his pure devotees, that one can start to understand the super excellent coexistence of opposites in the Supreme Lord.
