Your ever grateful servant

Dear devotees,

Today, I would like to share with you the joy and happiness of Krishna Consciousness. My name is Madhavi-lata dasi and I proudly declare “I am a servant of a glorious master. Srila Indradyumna Swami Maharaj ki jai!”

First of all I would like to mention that everything we have and have achieved is solely by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and my Guru Maharaj!

Krsna Consciousness is a wonderful process of developing a personal, loving relationship with God, or as we say affectionately “Thakuraji”.

But then the following question arises: How can we love somebody we know nothing about?

How can we love God and develop a loving relationship with Him if we know nothing about Him?

The answer is very simple: by the process of devotional service, we can gradually get to know who Krsna is and grow to love, within our hearts, His sweetest personality.

So today I would like to share my own experience of joy in devotional service. By the mercy of Srila Gurudeva, I received so many opportunities to serve Thakuraji and His representatives.

My dear Srila Gurudeva organizes the most wonderful preaching festivals all over the world and conquers the hearts of ordinary people with the culture of Bharata-varsa and the philosophy of Krsna Consciousness. Many dramas feature in these festivals and are based on sastras like Ramayana and Bhagavad-gita.

All these plays are directed according to modern ways, but the essence of the scripture remains as it is. We aim for this balance so that the people of the age of Kali can easily become attracted to Vedic culture and incorporate it to some degree into their lives. It is for that purpose I have learned the importance of engaging all the talents we have (even the ones that seem mundane) in devotional service. I am an aerial gymnast, and although it may seem to be a materialistic activity, I have come to understand that it is the consciousness with which we do a particular activity that really matters. We have to do everything as an offering to our spiritual master! Everything should be done for the pleasure of Sri Krsna.

I am so fortunate to be blessed with the opportunity to live and serve in Sri Vrindavan Dhama. Of course, that good fortune came only after continuously praying since childhood and endeavoring in so many ways. Ultimately, however, I am only here by Srila Prabhupada’s causeless mercy.

I could never dream of a more amazing life. Vrindavan is the most special place on this earth, and by serving here, one can attain the goal of life: krsna-prema-bhakti- pure unalloyed devotional service to Sri Krsna.

Here in Vrindavan every service is special, but it becomes even more special and cherished when attained after yearning for it and praying for it for a long period of time.

I have the opportunity to do seva for Srila Gurudeva’s personal Thakuraji daily, which is so special! And of course, I also serve the Lords of my heart and soul, who Srila Gurudeva mercifully gave me and instructed to worship.

Also under the guidance of excellent senior devotees, I serve in the deity kitchen, where we make many palatable dishes for the pleasure of Gaura Nitai, Krsna-Balarama and Radhe-Syama! It is amazing how the mind is brought under control simply by wanting to give pleasure to Thakuraji! Usually, we are the center of our own thoughts, but when we constantly meditate on how to please the Lord, that same mind transforms And the Lord’s appearance day becomes more important than our own.

During the year we celebrate so many appearance days of different avataras of Thakuraji. The process is amazing. Every time you serve, you find yourself more and more capable of offering more of yourself, without desiring anything in return!

Also I get the chance to make bouquets for Their Lordships daily! This service brings so much pleasure and happiness. It is very creative and I love to make something special and unique for the Lord’s pleasure. Although it requires lots of effort and time, it’s totally worth it when, the next day, you take darsana and see your small offering in the hands of Thakuraji.

Of course, to be properly fixed in service, one is required to follow strict sadhana and chant sincere japa, which sometimes – or even, let’s be honest,   most of the time – is hard. But still, and I am just sharing my own experience, it is the most beautiful feeling to start the day at 4am and run to the temple to get darsana of Their Lordships, then chant japa, and develop a relationship with Thakuraji by the process of arcana, worship. Puja inspires me so much.

All these activities is what truly makes person happy.

I have no idea how many lifetimes I have been wandering around, struggling to achieve this seva and life in Sri Vrndavan-dhama, and now as I finally get to live my dream, I am grateful beyond words to my dear Srila Gurudeva, who has saved me and introduced to Srila Prabhupada, who has mercifully engaged me in so many ways so that this life has meaning. Otherwise, what is life without seva? Service- is the essence of everything.

Jai Gaura Bhakta Vrnda

Jai Sri Vrindavan Dhama

Your servant,
Madhavi-lata dasi
